Like all other countries, The Gambia may not be crime-free, but it stands out as one of the most peaceful places in the world. We owe this partly to a historical fact, but the credit also goes to a determination to maintain the trend.Given the trend at the global level, in the face of this challenging effect of globalization, we could have easily succumbed to pressure if our system had not adjusted.
The government of the Gambia, especially within the past decade, has expressed a fare level of concern in this respect.
The presentation of hundreds of motorbikes to the various security units of the country by the president manifests his unreserved readiness, as he has always tried to put it, to make the country the safest of places in the world. As VP Njie-Saidy herself said it, as she handed over the gift, it is certainly not the first time this kind of help has come from the Gambian leader, and it certainly will not be the last.
Development like this does not only serve to boost the moral of the men and women who put their lives at risk, but it also help bolster their effort in trying to serve the country in their own way. But also this constant spree of support from the Commander-in-chief puts his men and women in the service under genuine pressure to deliver the goods to expectation.
Another way of reciprocating His Excellency’s unflinching support would be strengthening loyalty to the President and the people of the nation. They can do this effectively by setting themselves a target to ensure a crime free Gambia as envisaged by the president.
And us as civilians do have our role to play in this; the least we can do to supplement their effort is to collaborate with them at all times. We must do it because it is for ourselves, for our wives, for our children, and for the next generation of Gambians.
