In support of the people of Gaza

Editor,

Please allow me space on your widely read news paper to share my opinion on the ongoing violence in Gaza. I want to echo the voices of condemnation in the strongest possible terms of ongoing catastrophe in Gaza. Over the past two weeks, hundreds of people have been killed including innocent women and children.

As muslim students, we are joining the rest of the civilised world in solidarity to our brothers in Palestine. Some may wonder why, despite the fact that our country the Gambia is away from Palestine, our hearts are bleeding, our tears are running, due to the killings in Gaza by Israel, in the name of self defence.

I wonder who are they defending themselves against. Is it the children of Gaza or the women? Almost three quarter of the deaths registered so far are among women and children. Not even the para-medics nor the UN staff have been speared, yet the international community is not acting.

The Arba leaders can not even agree on a common statement to speak against the war. Many of my Gambian muslim youths feel that we do not have anything to do for our brothers in Gaza. Hence I am making a wake-up call to all Gambians, both Muslims or Christians, to offer prayers for the Palestine population, as the Muslims of Iran and the Christians of Betlahem did few days ago.

This is the least we can do. I further call on the Supreme Islamic Council to help us echo our voices louder to these war mongers and their supporters. These acts of the Zainosts do not even reflect the views of the Jewish people. It shows that they do not have a human heart in their bodies. No religion on earth can ever agree with such atrocities, only heartless people, unguided and unwise can commit such crimes and think that it will make them safe.

Furthermore, I call on all Gambians, students and non-students, especially those who are better off economically, to extend a helping hand to our brothers in Gaza. No help is small, especially for our brothers under attack. We should try to help by all means, because Quran teaches us that the beleavers are relatives.
