Kate Atori West is alleged to have caused the death of her husband, William Jarlath Aloyins West by hitting him with a pestle, sometime in 2006 at Sanyang village in Kombo South, Western Region. She has denied the charge.

Inspector Keita, attached to the Major Crime Unit of the police, told the Brikama High Court that while on duty at the Major Crime Unit on 19th July 2006 with one Sergeant Lamin Cham, now a Sub Inspector, Sgt Cham was called by Malamin Ceesay Officer Commanding Major Crime Unit to go and meet him at Commissioner Abdoulie Sanneh’s office.

He adduced that Sgt Cham left and returned with the accused with a statement and a covering letter.

He said Sgt. Cham told him that Kate was a suspect in the missing case of her husband following a one-day visit to Senegal.

He further told the court that when the accused was interviewed she told them that she travelled to Senegal with her husband for a day’s trip.

According to Inspector Keita, the accused said upon arrival in Dakar the husband told her that he was going to buy cigarettes. He said the accused further said that she stood there waiting but the husband never returned. And after waiting impatiently, she decided to follow but he was nowhere to be found. There and then, she decided to return to The Gambia alone.

The case has been adjourned to 3rd June 2009.
