The Leader of the opposition National Democratic Action Movement (NDAM) party has call on Gambians to make a new resolve towards the consolidation of the progress that they have made in all aspects of development.

Unity, he said, must be strengthened among Gambians for the collective achievement of our  aims and objectives with regards to nation building. Lamin Waa Juwara made these statements as as part of his 2009 New Year message to Gambians, during an interview with the Daily Observer at his Brikama residence, on the eve of New Year.

In his words, the Dankunku plain speaking veteran politician underscored the need for collective responsibility among Gambians. "I think the suggestion from some of my colleagues in the opposition to apologise to Gambians, was a step in the right direction. But frankly, I do not think an apology alone would be enough" he said.

According to the NDAM boss, in order to make progress and attain the set target goals for 2009, government must engage the opposition in frank discussions as to who has gone wrong and who is responsible for anything. "Gambians at home and in the diaspora need an explanation with regards to the crushing defeat and the subsequent splintered five party coalitions. ‘This year, we should reveal all as to who is responsible for what, in order to avoid any false start again," he said.

Mr Juwara then called on the young people of this country to make the very best and use the facilities available for them during the course of the New Year. The youths, he said, are the bearers of the future of this country, without whom no meaningful development could   be achieved. He challenged them to be creative during the course of the year with the intention to succeed. "The future of The Gambia belongs to the young people. Thus, they must be ready to make the country as a nation state that will live in dignity and respect amongst all the countries of the world," he said.

He used the opportunity to wish President Jammeh a happy New Year, noting that the New Year message he delivered has been well received by Gambians. He thanked the entire government of The Gambia for providing leadership during the course of 2008. He also wished   his colleagues in the opposition a happy New Year.

"I would also like to wish Gambians in the diaspora a happy new year," he concluded.
