Preparations are in high gear for the annual Kartong Cultural Festival in Kombo South, Western Region, scheduled for 26th March.
Back to the Roots Band, otherwise called Roots Kunta Kinteh, are set to drop their debut album at the event. Back to the Roots is a cultural band, formerly based in Australia, who have now relocated to the Gambia. The band specialises in the promotion and development of arts and culture.
The band, under the leadership and coordination of Mbackeh Darboe, a renowned Gambian artist based in Australia, has for the past 12 years succeeded in making a name in the world of music. “Mbackeh Darboe performed in many festivals and exhibitions throughout Australia. He provides valuable African cultural education and held workshops for all ages especially in schools,” said Jennifer Mimilene, manager of Mbackeh Darboe.
The Australian manager told Arts and Culture about Darboe’s performances at the parliament of Australia and his work with the immigration department of Australia. She also revealed that Darboe is also running a programme called African Cultural Experience in Southern Australia in collaboration with Global Education, an Australian based organisation that promotes the right to education throughout the world.
