Thursday, April 2, 2009

A sixteen-team tournament named after Deputy Inspector General of Police, Modou Gaye, kicked off recently at the Kotu playing ground.

The aim of the tournament according to DIG Modou Gaye during the opening of the tournament is to promote young talents and also bring back the glory days of the Kotu field to its normal purpose.  He said, “for the past years it was not used for its purpose and as a result has been used instead by thieves and other criminals as a hiding place.”

DIG Gaye pointed out that the winner of the trophy will go home with a cash prize of D10, 000.00 while the runners up will walk away with D5000.00, adding that other prizes will be given as well at the end of the tournament.

Fifa FC and Jennbi FC played the opener and the game ended in a deadlock.

Malick Mendy gave Fifa the lead in the 29th minute, and moments later Jenni FC leveled the scores.

Both teams had clear chances before the end of the game but failed to capitalise on their opportunities and the game ended 1-1.
