A Liverpool community sports group is embarking on an African adventure to forge links with The Gambia, Liverpool daily post has revealed.
Liver World Community Sports is taking a team of young men to take part in a variety of workshops and a football tournament, organised in partnership with the Gambia Football Association.
Liver World is based in Kensington and funded by Kensington Regeneration and Community Seven. The voluntary organisation is behind a number of successful multi-cultural events, such as the Anthony Walker Festival and the Liverpool All Nations’ Cup, which involved 20 football teams from different nationalities and faiths.
The squad travelling to West Africa includes a school teacher from Kensington, trainee youth workers and a Level 1 FA coach. They are taking a trophy signed by Tranmere Rovers winger Edrissa Sonko, who is a regular for the Gambia Scorpions. Siddi Majubah, Liver World Co-ordinator, said: “This project will promote football as a way of building links between Liverpool and The Gambia.”
