National Female Team Beat Female Selection

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

As part of the preparation before the start of the West African Football Union (WAFU) championship, slated for August 15th 2009, the Gambia female national team played a warm-up match against a selection of players drawn from different female division one teams, at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

Star striker Fatou Kinteh Jeng, commonly known as (Peter Crouch) and her striking-partner, who was recently awarded the leading goal-scorer in the GFA division one female league, Awa Demba both registered their names on the score-sheet for the national team to beat their opponents by 2-1in a friendly encounter.

The national side conceded their only defective goal, courtesy of Kinteh’s United striker Marie Colley from a close range gasp.

Isatou Saidykhan failed to extend the national team’s lead when the attacker with a poacher’s eye for goal missed spot kick when substitute Hella Diko was brought down inside the opponent penalty area mid-way through the second period.

Speaking to Pointsport shortly after the friendly game, the Head Coach of the national side Buba Jallow is of the belief that the game will help his side prepare much better ahead of the Nigerian championship.

“We have very good players who are also determined and hungry for success and if they continue to try hard there is a possibility that we will cause upsets in Nigeria,” the confident coach was quoted as saying.

The game is the team’s first friendly since their historic 6-0 thrashing over Ziguinchor in Casamance last month.

The national female team’s proposed friendly game against Kaolack has been put to a half, due to other circumstances surrounding the trip. But if the words of Coach Buba Jallow are any thing to go by, then the team will not be involved in any friendly international ahead of the championship.

It could be recalled that Buba Jallow was appointed to take charge of the female national team four months ago.
