In his continued devotion in the enhancement and empowerment of the young people of The Gambia, the president of the Republic, Professor Alhaji Yahya Jammeh, last Thursday evening made a high-minded donation of 111 bags of rice, 111 drums of cooking oil and a cash amount of two hundred and ten thousand dalasis to the national organising committee of Nayconf, currently being held in Farafenni, North Bank Region.

The presentation of the donated items was held at the Farafenni Youth Centre. Sergeant Lamin D Sanyang of The Gambia National Guards Battalion presented the donation on behalf of President Jammeh, through the chief of defence staff, Major General Lang Tombong Tamba.

In receiving the donation, Hon Sheriff ML Gomez, secretary of state for Youths and Sports, commended President Jammeh for the gesture. He said that the donation did not come to him as a surprise. According to him, such gestures are now becoming a custom in president Jammeh’s development agenda. He added that the donation is a gladden situation within the young people.

SoS Gomez further urged the young people to embrace President Jammeh, saying he is a leader who is worthy of being cherished. He then thanked President Jammeh, on behalf of the youth fraternity, for the gesture, saying that it will go a long way in complementing the feeding aspect of the event. He also reassured that the donated items would be utilised accordingly.

Momodou Marr, deputy governor NBR, applauded President Jammeh for the gesture, highlighting that similar gestures were also witnessed in Brikama during the 2006 Nayconf from President Jammeh.

Other speakers at the ceremony included all the regional governors and deputy governors who were present at the 2008 youth gathering as well as youth chairpersons and Nayconf delegates.
