The Gambian leader, Professor Alhagie Yahya Jammeh, has donated a fully air-conditioned, minibus with a capacity of 25 passengers to the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council.
The donation came after a meeting between the president and the executive of GSIC, a few days ago. The brand new vehicle was handed over to the Council, last Friday, at State House, by Ismaila Sambou, secretary of state for local government, lands and religious affairs, on behalf of Professor Jammeh.
This benevolent gesture of the president has been widely hailed by council members who said that it came at a time when the country’s Supreme Islamic Body needed it more to reach out to Muslim communities across the length and breadth of the country.
It could be recalled that the Gambian leader, during last Wednesday’s meeting with the council’s members, listened to the scholers put forward numerous concerns hindering the administrational operation of the council. Key among them waswas the issue of mobility, which they claimed, contribute immensely to inefficiency in service delivery of the country’s Islamic institution.
At that meeting, the Gambian leader offered to donate a vehicle to them in a bid to ease mobility constraints at the council. With this new bus already donated, expectations are high regarding effective service delivery at the council, especially when it comes to reaching out to the people.
