The Flying Eagles of Nigeria began their WAFU under 20 campaign on a high gear after an emphatic 2-0 win against Togo in their Group A opener played in Oghara, Delta State, on Friday.
Enugu Rangers' Okechukwu Uchebo opened scores for the hosts in the first half, while Enyimba's Stephen Worgu made assurance doubly sure with the second goal after the interval.
The Togolese team proved a hard nut for the Flying Eagles to crack in the first half, but the Nigerians came out better in the second half. In a post-match interview with waiting journalists, Nigeria’s second goal scorer, Stephen Worgu, said he was elated with the performance of the team, as it was their first competitive match since they came together.
Worgu pledged that the team would do better as the competition progresses, saying: "I am happy that I got one of the goals in this match. I am also happy for the team, because we did not get our pattern right in the first half. We had to come out better in the second half, and we were able to get the job done."
The 2008 CAF Champions League's highest scorer with 13 goals who noted that the expectant crowd put a lot of pressure on the Flying Eagles, was full of gratitude to the initiators of the competition, noting that it would help to make the Nigerian team a better side for next year's African Youth Championship finals in Rwanda.
The draw for the Rwanda finals, which is fixed between January 18 and February 1, in Kigali, was held over the weekend. The Flying Eagles have been pitted against Egypt, Ivory Coast and South Africa in Group B.
The hosts, Rwanda, will play Mali, Ghana and Cameroon in Group A which tagged the “Group of Death”. The four semi-finalists from the tournament in Rwanda will automatically qualify for the 2009 Under-20 World Cup to be played in Egypt.
If hosts Egypt reach the last four in Rwanda then the 5th place team will qualify for the Under-20 World Cup.
