NYSS 10th Intake Orientation Launched

The Gambia National Youth Service Scheme under the purview of the Ministry of Youth and Sports on Wednesday held an orientation session for its 10th intake.

The event, which was graced by the Chairman and members of the NYSS Board of Directors, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, was held at the NYSS youth camp in Bakau.

Mr. Babou Jobe, the Camp Director, in his welcoming remarks, revealed that a total number of 200 Corp members were registered comprising 153 males and 47 females from different areas in the country. The orientation programme, among others, availed members “the opportunity to be put through a regulated camp environment, endurance and physical exercise”.

He added that members were introduced to leadership skills and good practices, lectures such as talks on NYSS, to internalise the ideals of the NYSS, entrepreneurship training, peer health education, sexual reproductive health, counseling and guidance and English Language. He commended Gamjobs for funding the 10th intake of the NYSS.

For his part, Musa Mbye, the Executive Director of the NYSS disclosed that the NYSS Board of Directors through the Ministry of Youth and Sports had secured funding from Gamjobs for the support of 200 youths with marketable skills.

The funding, he said, include but not limited to the maintenance of the NYSS youth camp to the tune of D207, 600, support to youth skills training at a tune of D1.2 million and D7200 being funding for 50 youth entrepreneurs (Ex-corp members).
