Pap Saine citizenship trial resumes

The ongoing false declaration trial involving Pap Saine, the managing editor and co-proprietor of The Point newspaper, yesterday resumed before Senior Magistrate Lamin George at the Banjul Magistrates Court.

Inspector Sainey Ndure, an investigation officer attached to the Major Crime Unit at the Police Headquarters in Banjul, testified during yesterday’s proceedings. The policy detective was subsequently cross examined by a team of defence counsel comprised of Antouman Gaye, Awa Sisay Sabally, Modou Drammeh and H Gaye. The police detective explained that on 9th February 2009, he had been assigned to obtain a statement from the accused at the Major Crime office.

According to him, he obtained the statement from the accused in the presence of an independent witness. He identified the said statement, and photocopies of the passport, birth certificate, ID card and voters card of the accused, which were all tendered and marked as exhibits. The case was later adjourned to 8th April 2009.
