Police, residents debunk Tallinding armed robbery allegations

Wednesday, December 17, 2008
The Gambia Police Force and the people of Tallinding Kunjang have, with one voice, refuted a recent newspaper article alleging ongoing armed robbery incidences around Tallinding Bantaba.

The station officer of Tallinding Police Station, W/Inspector Gass Sabally, told this reporter she was surprised when she was called by the police commissioner of Kanifing Division and asked to report to the Serrekunda Police Station after the publication of the said article.

She said that they have never received any report whatsoever of such activities in Bantaba, which is just next door to the compound of the Alkalo of the town. Inspector Sabally challenged that if the author of the said article had any evidence of armed robbery at the said area, the first thing they should have done was to report the matter to the police for immediate action.

"We patrol the whole of Tallinding 3 times every week," she emphasized, "and that is different from what the PIU patrol team and our task force at team at Serrekunda do. In fact such a thing cannot happen here without the knowledge of the Alkalo, because he lives just opposite the Bantaba."

Making reference to the recent donation of a new vehicle to the police by President Jammeh, in response to a request by the community, the Inspector promised increased patrols to ensure the safety of the community.

The Alkalo of Tallinding, Alhajie Ebou Badjie, made a categorical dismissal of the allegation, calling it a complete fabrication. "How can there be armed robbery in this town and neither the Alkalo, nor the police or even the residents of this community is aware of it?" Alkalo Badjie queried.

He maintained further that crime rate in Tallinding was very low, noting that throughout the course of this year, he had known of only one occurrence of theft in the area. But he called on the general public to be careful with the way they handle information, pointing out that information like the one at hand tarnishes the good image of a community and the country at large.

Nominated councilor and chairman of Tallinding Ward, also a member of the Community Police team, Babou Gaye Sonko, expressed complete disapproval of the report. He described the author of the said article as "a mere story teller" who wanted to taint the good serve the police was rendering the community.

A member of the Tallingding council of elders, Pa Surry Sanneh, described the report as news to them. He said that Bantaba being their headquarters, they are always there until late into the night.

The police PRO for his part, ASP Sulayman Secka, seized the opportunity to inform the general public of the institution of a community policing in place, announcing that if anybody had any information concerning any illegal activity, they could contact the Community Police authority within their community who would in turn contact their office at Serrekunda for possible action.

This reporter also walked around the said Bantaba area and talked to some residents but all of those he talked to were satisfactory with the security in place, in approval of their Alkalo.
