Yesterday, Thursday December 11, 2008, the world renowned Jamaican artist, Sizzla Kalonji, arrived in The Gambia to tumultuous welcome.
The international reggae superstar is expected stay in the country for approximately three weeks. During this period, he will perform at various venues in the country, notably the Independence Stadium and the Brikama Mini Stadium.
Sizzla was met at the Banjul International Airport not only by the organisers of the event and media personnel, but by a good representation of his numerous fans. Prior to the arrival of the plane which brought him, scores of fans could be seen lounging around the airport.
Sizzla’s appearance was met with rapturous joy as fans rush to catch a glimpse of and possibly touch the man many of them spend hours every day listening to. His convoy was joined by many private vehicles filled with fans.
Many people lined up on the road to catch welcome him as he sat atop his car to wave at them. Chants of "Sizzla" could be heard throughout.
Born Miguel Collins on April 17, 1976 in St Mary, Sizzla was raised in the community of August Town by devout Rastafarian parents. Unlike many other singers, Sizzla is a born Rastafarian. He began his career in the music industry in his early teenage years. He first made a name for himself with the Caveman Hi-Fi sound system.
For a while, he tour with the famous Luciano to great acclaim. His debut album "Burning Up" was produced in alliance with Fattis Burrell (Exterminator). With the same producer, Sizzla went on to release the phenomenal "Praise Ye Jah", the album which established him as a top conscious reggae musician.
In 1997, Sizzla released the "Black Woman and Child" album. The single whose name the album bears has since then become an international anthem.
Over the years, Sizzla has firmly established his presence in the reggae scene with the frequency and consistent quality of his releases. With Capleton, Buju Banton and Luciano, Sizzla is credited with helping to bring reggae music back to its roots and culture origins.
Sizzla is accompanied to The Gambia by Princess Menen and Jesse Jendah.
