SOS Social Work Department recently held their first graduation in the
presence of many dignitaries at SOS, Bakoteh.
35 men and
women graduated as social workers after a fruitful year of studies and hard
work.
During the
ceremony Madam Ellen, RMATC Director, gave the history of SOS. She said SOS mothers have to go through an
educational pact and as a result some SOS mothers and aunties are graduating
and that they will all go on to serve society.
Dr. Mendes,
chairperson SOS social work, gave the overall history of SOS starting from 1949.
“Some of
our children have gone to overseas and some are integrated into society and
gainfully employed,” she said. She praised the UTG for helping to set up the
social work programme. She urged the community to employ the graduands.
“Social
work as a profession enhances social change, their training is vital,” she
said. She stressed that this could not be acquired in a few weeks. To the
graduands she said they should not be afraid to support people in need.
Abdoulie
Senghore, representing UTG, said UTG has been involved formally or informally.
UTG, he said, is committed to the smooth running of the social work programme
at SOS. “We are about to upgrade the
diploma programme to a BA programme in the University,” he said. He said the
graduands should continue to learn.
Ousman
Nyang, speaking on behalf of SoS for higher Education, said they were in support of
Social Work programmes in the country.
He
acknowledged the plight of the disabled as enormous.
He
emphasised that the more one knows the more you discover what you don’t know.
“Social
Welfare set up in 1962,” he said. He said they should be good ambassadors for
their teachers to have good praise.
