The Gambia National Sports Council, the body responsible for the organisation and the monitoring of sports in the country has been dissolved with effect from March 5, 2009.
The dissolution, according to an obscure statement issued by the council, came after the expiry of the four-year term of the members. The release, which was signed by the executive secretary of the council Mr Alieu Cham, said the dissolution was effected by the minister of Youth and Sports in exercise of his powers under Section 6 of the National Sports Council Act.
The released added that in the interim a committee would be put in place to administer the affairs of the council. The dissolution, which came on the heels of the expulsion of the national boxing federation for its involvement in a visa scam, will however affect only the nominated chairman, chairman persons of the regional sports committees and the nominated members.
The Gambia National Sports was established in 2001 by an Act of parliament to oversee the organisation and the monitoring of sports in the country.
