In recent days the country have witnessed so many fatal road accidents.

Mostly, these accidents occur within the Greater Banjul Area and Western Region.

Last weekend a fatal accident occurred in Tallinding in the Kanifing Municipality, as a result of which, two lives were lost.

Just less than a week another serious accident happened this time around in Brikama, Western Region. There too, one person was reported dead and twenty-two others injured. This indeed took the entire country into trauma.

It is sad that people leave their homes for work or business only to die on the way, because of recklessness or carelessness of another person.

Our drivers must understand that the lives they safe may be theirs as the saying goes.

They must also realise that they will be accountable for the lost of any life because of their negligence.

The roads are not constructed for drivers to cause accidents, but meant to ease the movement of people and goods.

Some people do drunk driving, while others are sometimes not qualified or fit to drive on the highways.

Passengers should now serve as their own police for their own safety.

The police should intensify the effort to get rid of all drivers that are not fit to ply our roads. They should also prosecute them to the full force of the law to deter others from over-speeding and driving recklessly.

It has also been noted with concern that some drivers are in the habit of putting on full-lights while driving at night. Those in the habit are advised to always deem their lights, especially when another car is seen coming from the opposite end. This can also cause trouble even to pedestrians.

Once again, our sympathy goes to the families of all those who lost their lives in the recent road accidents, and also our prayers are for the injured.
