The first Supreme Court Session in 2009 is to commence Monday 16th March 2009.

According to press release from the office of the Chief Justice, the two-week sittings of the court would deal with eight matters; one criminal and six civil appeals plus a constitutional review case.

The session, to be led by the Chief Justice, Abdou Kareem Savage, would comprise five other judges: Justice Irene Mambilima, Deputy Chief Justice of Zambia, Justice Niki Tobi, Nigerian Supreme Court judge, Justice Victor Dotse and Justice Professor Samuel Kofi Date-Bah, Supreme Court Judge from Ghana and Justice Ade Renner-Thomas, a retired Chief Justice of Sierra Leone.

In another development, Justice James Barnabas Kalaile has been appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal. Justice Kalaili would be on Commonwealth Technical Assistance and would assume duties very soon.

Justice Kalaili, a Malawian, retired as Acting Chief Justice of Malawi in 2008 after serving as Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeal of Malawi for several years. He had also served in the Malawian Ministry of Justice as Secretary of Justice, Solicitor General, among other important public sector appointments in Malawi, the release concluded.
