Toubabo’s Mons relegated

Monday, April 20, 2009
Gambian international Mustapha Toubabo Jarju has been relegated for the second time in his career after his Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Raec-Mons Bergen was relegated to the second tier of Belgian football.

The club’s leading scorer Toubabo scored his eight goal of the season on Saturday as Mons surrendered a 2-1 lead to go down 3-1 at Club Brugge. And after Dender beat Roeselare, Mons can’t catch them with only four games remaining. This is because the Belgian League is currently changing from an 18-team league to a 16-team league for the 2009/10 season.

This season, the bottom two teams will relegate, while the numbers 15 and 16 play in a playoff against two teams from the second division. Only one of these 4 remains in the first division together with the second division champion.

Mons lie rooted bottom of the table with only 17 points, 14 points behind 15th and 16th places Dender and Ebrima Sawaneh’s KV Kortrijk respectively. Toubabo was earlier relegated with his first Belgian side SK Lierse and after another season with them in the Second Division, he signed for Mons last summer. Toubabo must now find a new club when the transfer window re-opens in July as he is too good for the Second Division.
