The death is announced of Pa William Ndure commonly known by his contemporaries as Ngarrah a name he picked up during his playing days.
Pa William was one of the best inside right players in the Gambia in the late 60’s and early 70’s. He played for Phantoms, USA and Black Diamonds and helped them win several championship trophies. He was an automatic choice for the national football team and was a member of the Gambian football team that last defeated Senegal, in an official match, in the Kwame Krumah Gold Cup competition played in Dakar, in 1962.
Pa William was a disciplined player and was never given a red card throughout his football career. He was the peace maker in the team and was always available to advise and console players who were in distress. Pa William was not only a football player, he was a member of the Lenian Club based at Hagan Street which used to organise annual inter-club Athletics challenge against the Roxy Vous which was based at Dobson Street. Pa William was their champion high jumper and was in their relay team.
Mr. Pa William Ndure was inducted into the Gambia’s Sports Merit List by the Gambia National Olympic Committee in 2007. He was one of the country’s great players and a role model for young players. His son Ebou Ndure, has once served as first vice president of the Gambia Football Association.
