Tujereng, Strode College inaugurate recreational centre

The Tujereng Youths Association in collaboration with their UK counterparts, Strode College, over the weekend inaugurated a modern computer lab and a Basketball lawn in the village.

Strode College is a school in UK that formed a link with the youths of Tujereng village sometimes in 2005. Prior to their arrival, the students of the College have embarked on a series of fundraising activities in UK to help build a modern computer lab that has an internet cafe, two toilets, a cafeteria and a kitchen, for their counterparts in The Gambia. A sum of 15,000 Pound Sterling was raised to pay for the construction of the just completed structures in the village.

Speaking at the ceremony, Malang Jassy, director of youth and sports, thanked the students of the college for their gesture, noting that the centre will help the youths of Tujereng and its surrounding communities to develop their talents in such games like volleyball and basketball. According to him, the facility will not only benefit the Tujereng youths but also the entire Kombo South youths.

However, the youth and sports director challenge the Tujereng youths to make the best use of the facility provided for them and distance themselves from anything that can cause friction in the village.

Laurence Smith, one of the founding mothers of the link, briefed the gathering about how the link came about years back. She expressed delight at the warm reception accorded to them. Other speakers at the ceremony included the Alkalo of Tujereng, Mbasirey Jabang . The ceremony was chaired by Lamin Bojang Chairman of the Tujereng Youths Association.
