Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh of the Kanifing Magistrates Court on Wednesday convicted Seedy Jallow and Buba Saine and fined them D3,000 each in default to serve 6 months imprisonment with hard labour.

The duo were found guilty of robbery contrary to Section 252 of the Criminal Code, laws of The Gambia. In his mitigation plea, the first convict, Seedy Jallow, begged the court to have mercy on him, claiming that he had learnt from his sister that during his detention  his father had passed away.

Buba Saine, for his part, pleaded with the court for leniency, claiming that his parents are old and he has sisters to take care of as the breadwinner. Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh in his judgement decried the increasing crime rate involving youths of this country adding that they could have made a head way in life if they had engaged in productive activities.

According to him, the court was of the view that the convicts merited some punishment in order to deter others.  He urged them to change their attitude. Magistrate Mbackeh gave them the aforementioned sentence.  He further ordered that the convicts pay D600 each as compensation to the complainant, Basaikou Suwareh.
