Dudu Kassa Jaata, Others’ Trial Continues

The criminal trial of Dudu Kassa Jaata and seven others continues on Monday 20th November 2006, before magistrate Mbacke of the Kanifing magistrates court.

In his testimony, police detective Abdoulie SK Manneh attached to the Bakau police station, told the court that on 1st August 2006, he was on duty at the Bakau Police Station when he was assigned a certain duty to perform. He said on that particular day there was a complaint lodged in the charge office by one Dubois family against the Jatta family of Bakau.

He said they contacted the police intervention unit (PIU) for reinforcement. He said they got information that a lady by the name Mariama Fatty was also a suspect and was selling at the compound gate.

He further testified that they left for the scene on board the police vehicle and upon arrival they found a lady selling at the compound gate whom they later knew to be Nyima Manneh. There she was arrested and taken to the station.
He added that after knowing that it was the wrong person they arrested, she was released immediately. He said later one Isatou Jawara and two ladies came to the station to enquire why Nyima was arrested and they were informed accordingly.
He said Dudu Kassa Jaata and Nuha came to the station with a crowd behind them comprising of women, children, boys and girls. He said upon arrival at the police gate they stopped and started insulting, throwing stones while Dudu and Nuha were inside the police station.

He was at the time standing within the crowd. He added that one unknown person among the crowd threw stones at the Gamtel booth. He said he was recording their behaviour and insults.
He said Dudu Kassa Jaata later came and found the crowd of people in the compound who insisted that no officer will enter the compound. He said later ASP Sawaneh was allowed to enter and he too entered.
He said ASP Sawaneh was appealing to the crowd to produce Dudu, later Dudu Kassa Jaata arrived and was told by officer Sawaneh that he was under arrest but Dudu insisted that he would not go to the station.
He added that there was a push and pull. He said Lamin Jawara told ASP Sawaneh that he would bring Dudu to the station on board his vehicle. He said Dudu later escaped and Lamin Jawara along side Isatou Jawara were arrested and taken to the police and later to the PIU in Kanifing. He said he personally obtained their statement, before making his own statement. The said mobile recording voice was played in court.

Also testifying in court was one Sirah Jammeh of Bakau, a teacher by profession who said on the 27th July while assigned as a registration agent for APRC, the accused Cherno Ndure Jarjue came to the center Bantang-koto with an iron-bar and said who gave a bag of rice to the police to arrest Mr. Ousman Jaata,, and then started to insult their parents in Mandinka. Then from there he reported the matter to the police and gave his statement.
