SK East clinch fifth zonal title

Serrekunda East zone claimed their fifth zonal championship title on Sunday, December 10, after beating Brikama zone in a fiercely-competed final.

Brikama side, however, made the East side suffered for the accolade as evident in the tooth-and-tail 2-2 full-time scoreline before the Serrekunda East prevailed winners in the post-match spot kick.

Taking advantage of their home crowd, Serrekunda East admittedly started the match, with a brink of comfort that arguably showed them dominated the first half. Relying on their bright start, Serrekunda East break the stalemate in the 30th minutes, through their prolific striker, Ousainou Touray. Just two minutes later, Touray stretched the scoreline to mark his double in the day and his seventh goal in the championship. The promising 2-0 lead was enough to put, the rather flabby Brikama side, on the alert.

Fresh from break, the Western Region side put up a stunning performance that out eventually showed them cancelled out both goals before the regular period expired. However, luck ran out of their way when Serrekunda East proved the better side in the spot kick.

As champions, Serrekunda East received a handsome prize of D25, 000.00, a giant trophy and twenty-five goal medals, while Brikama, as runners-up, consolidated themselves with a cash prize of D15, 000.00 and twenty-five silver medals. Bakau, who earlier defeated Gunjur by 3-2 to land the third spot, bag a cash prize of D6, 000.00, with twenty-five bronze medals.

A consolidation prize of D6, 000.00 was given to the remaining five sides, namely Gunjur, Sukuta, Banjul, Lamin and Serrekunda West for their participation.

Sunday’s final was graced by scores of sports enthusiasts and dignitaries, including Mr Seedy Kinteh, Col Lang Tombong Tamba, Alhagi Mass Axi Gye, the President, First Vice-President and the Second Vice-President of the Gambia Football Association, respectively.
