20-Year-Old Mai Emerges Africell’s Millionnaire

The One Million Dalasis Africell end-of-year raffle bonanza that commenced since the start of December 2006 was brought to a much-awaited end on Friday. The end of the competition spelt an exciting rise in the fortune of a 29-year-old lady. The programme was held at Africell headquarters on Kairaba Avenue.

The 20-year-old Maimuna of Tallinding Sicap successfully won the much sought after prize, after the second draw between Edrissa Badjie , Maimuna Sanyang and Manding Daffeh. Lots of other prizes were given away to various winners. The first runner-up, Manding Daffeh, walked away with a giant television set while the second runner-up, Edrissa Badjie, went home with a big size fridge.

Speaking earlier before the draw, the Managing Director of Africell, Meheddiene Makkaoui, said that the new initiative under the leadership of His Excellency, the president of the republic, is geared towards the development of The Gambia, adding that it seeks to address challenges, unite the efforts of institutions and maintain the Gambian economy.

The Africell boss also revealed that his company has expanded its coverage with the establishment of nine new sites to enhance communication in the country, especially in the rural areas, noting that Africell has been contributing to the socio-economic development of The Gambia.

Also speaking during the occasion, Mr Badara Mbye of Africell, said that this is the third time Africell has given something to their subscribers and the Gambia at large, adding that Africell is helping its subscribers and the society as a whole.

Expressing her joy, tearful Miss Maimuna Sanyang thanked Allah for coming to her aid at the time she needed it most. On her plans, Maimuna promised to put the money into good use by buying a compound for her family, boosting her mother’s business and pursuing her education. She lamented that though she is a Grade 9 drop-out she has always looked forward to continuing her education.

The lucky millionaire was accompanied home by Manding Culture of Bakau, staff of Africell, friends and well-wishers.
