These pictures depict an accident at the T-Junction behind the stadium on the Traffic Lights/Banjul Highway in Bakau.
The accident occurred during the early morning rush hour yesterday and was reportedly due to reckless driving. Whether this is the case or not, the nature of the accident indicates that it could have been avoided if the two vehicles were running at moderate speed upon reaching the junction as clearly stated by the traffic signs around the area.
This kind of phenomenon has worried many in the country, as of recent there has been an increase in road accidents resulting in the loss of life and property. Many attributes this to reckless driving by motorists who do not value life and property at all, thus wreaking havoc on society.
Most of the accidents in the country in the past five years occurred on the newly constructed highways as motorists take advantage of the smoothness of the roads and frequently overspeed.
For example, the Kombo Coastal Road, which is in good condition has been described by many as a ‘quagmire’, due to the way motorists drive on these roads. Similarly, the newly constructed Kerewan-Farrafenni and Laminkoto Stretch have also had their own share of the trouble, to the extent that President Jammeh had to caution the police to be vigilant on the roads and take appropiate action against any motorists caught driving recklessly.
The general public, especially passengers must keep an eye on this and inform the police immediately they come across any form or manifestation of this menace. To motorists: ‘Drive safely to save lives, including yours’.
