Students of Bakau Lower Basic School and Tourist Guards at the Sunbeach Hotel committed themselves to cleaning different public locations in Bakau over the past few weeks.
It is against this background that on Saturday, December 15, students and staff of the school and the tourist guards went out in large numbers to clean the Sait Matty Junction, Bakau Lower Basic School and the Daily Observer. The group also embarked on a road safety rehabilitation and painting of the perimeter fence of the school.
The marathon exercise which lasted for almost three hours left the vicinity very clean, healthy and safe for driving.
Speaking to Daily Observer shortly after the exercise, Basiru Gassama, co-ordinator of the initiative commended the staff and students of the school, as well as tourist guards for their contribution to the nation’s health sector.
According to Gassama, the area was totally neglected by both neighbours and private shopkeepers around the area despite President Jammeh’s initiative, ‘Operation Clean the Nation’.
“The said junction was turned by the neighbours into a dumpsite to the deteriment of our schoolgoing children. Let those neighbours stop using that vicinity as a dumping ground for the sake of God and students who need a healthy and conducive environment to learn in,” he said.
Gassama also used the occasion to appeal to those companies who have their sign boards in the vicinity to clean the area during Operation Clean the Nation.
He finally appealed to the authorities to remove the rubbish located between the school and the Bakau Football field.
Momodou Dukuray, headmaster of the school echoed similar sentiments. It could be revealed that the same group of patriots rendered voluntary cleansing services to the Cape Point Tourism Area a few weeks ago.
