The President of The Gambia Football Coaches Association, Pa Suwareh Faye has stressed that his fellow coaches should be respected for the good job that they are doing. The Africell-Sait Matty head coach told Observer Sports that coaching in The Gambia is a sacrifice considering the meagre salary involved.
“We have to respect our local coaches. Gambian coaches are doing extremely well despite the lack of regular training and exposure,” he posited.
Coach Faye’s comments come hot on the heels of the persistent criticism being levied against Peter Bonu Johnson, Gambia’s Under-20 head coach.
Faye, who once served as a coach for both The Gambia U-17 and U-23 teams, denounced the acts of unnecessary criticism and harassment meted out to the coach, who he described as a real hero.
“Bonu Johnson is a pride for The Gambia Football Coaches Association. He has made the whole nation proud and his heroic effort to qualify The Gambia to her first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup finals should be acknowledged by all and sundry”.
Faye also poured praises on The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) and the national football governing body (GFA) for awarding Bonu Johnson an international scholarship to further his coaching career. He said such a training package will not only help to develop the standards of the Gambian coaches but the game of football in general.
