The athletics final featuring Secondary Schools from around the country will take place on the 15th of April at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
The Inter schools athletics championship is staged yearly, and is an important avenue for the scouting of highly talented athletes for national purposes.
As a tradition, regions in the country organise athletics heats at their own levels to properly select outstanding athletes that would be representing them in the final.
Alhagie S Darboe, Secretary General of The Gambia Secondary Schools Sports Committee, speaking to Pointsports revealed that, currently, all other regions except Greater Banjul Region had held their regional athletics heats since last month and during the first weekend of March 2008.
“The Greater Banjul heats, which are expected to be competed by all schools in the area, will take place this weekend. All is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Independence Stadium,” he explained.
100m, 200m, 3000m, 800m 4x100m, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot put and others will be competed for during the three days heats for the Greater Banjul zone.
Mr Darboe however appealed to all participating schools to maintain discipline during the heats.
National Athletes like long distance runner Ansu Sowe,Suwaibou Sanneh, Fatou Tiyana and Mama Gassama all hailed from the Inter Secondary School Athletics championship.
The secondary schools are divided into four zones, namely, Greater Banjul zone with 17 schools from Senior category while 18 junior secondary schools will also line up from the zone.
Other zones are Brikama zone, Farafenni zone, Armitage zone and Pakalinding, Berending and Basse Zones for the Junior category.
