Gambia Under 17 team beat their Guinea Bissau counterparts 3-1 in a warm-up match played at the Independence Stadium on Saturday.
A first-half goal from Steve Biko’s forward Alasana Camara and two second-half goals from Buba Jallow and Dawda Ceesay aided the Gambia to maul the visitors who had however brought with them quite an impressive pedigree.
Gambia’s Egyptian coach, Tarik Siagy, told Observer Sports, shortly after the final whistle that he was pleased with the performance of his side who gelled into a team despite the short period they spent together.
He said: “It is a good starting and I’m happy with the performance. The team is new and this game was their first competitive match.”
“What we need now is to give them more exposure and this is why we plan to have another international friendly match with Senegal at the end of the month in Dakar.”
In their quest for a place in the 8th edition of the African Under 17 championships finals to be hosted in Algeria next year, The Gambia Under 17 team will take on Sierra Leone in the first round of the qualifying rounds with the first leg taking place in Banjul on the final weekend of August.
The return leg will come fortnight later in Freetown, with the winner proceeding to face the winner in Ghana - Libya match for the final round tie in November.
