Wednesday, January 10, 2007
The Gambia Red Cross Society last week ended a five-day workshop on Disaster Preparedness for 65 members of four different communities in the Kanifing Municipality.

The communities that took part in the workshop were Ebo Town, Tallinding, Bakoteh and Bundung, which suffered most in the recent flood and other disasters in the municipality.

The training was sponsored by the International Federation for Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFCRC).

Speaking at the closing ceremony held at the headquarters of the Gambia Red Cross Society, the Chairperson for Disaster Relief of the Gambia Red Cross Society, Buba Darboe, said: “This is to enable community members know how to tackle problems in terms of disaster.”

Mr Darboe further said disaster was a serious havoc affecting not only the Kanifing Municipality but also The Gambia at large.

Speaking on behalf of IFCRC, the facilitator of the training, Mr Ata Benson, a Nigerian volunteer, said that during his study or survey in the country he learnt that the most affected areas in terms of disaster in the KMC were the four communities in question.

He urged delegates from the communities to make best use of the training to curb serious hazards, which lead to damages and loss of lives to communities, especially the youth.
