Secy for Local Govt and Lands Visits Bakoteh Dumpsite

The Honorable Secretary of State for Local Government and Lands, Ismaila Sambou, accompanied by a high ranking delegation from his Department of State, the Lord Mayor and senior personnel from the Kanifing Municipal Council, on Wednesday 21 March 2007 visited the engineered landfill site at Bakoteh, a major environmental sub-project implemented at a total cost of D45, 000,000.

The objective of the sub-project was to construct an effective waste management system that will ensure the protection of the environment and enhance public health and safety. The subproject was funded by the Gambia Government through the World Bank/IDA through the supplemental credit of the Poverty Alleviation and Capacity Building Project (PACABP) with counterpart contribution from the Kanifing Municipal Council.

The scope of the works included:

- The Clearing of the site of all littered garbage, preparation of a land filling area in the quarry by excavation in mainly soft material, grading and compaction of the base (sub-grade) of the quarry, land filling by “cell method” the littered garbage.

- The construction of gravel access roads

- Construction of a boundary fence;

Construction of a guard house

The works was implemented by SINCO-spa, an Italian company, and the supervising consultant was GAMTECH, a local Consultancy firm based in the Gambia. GAMWORKS was responsible for the overall monitoring, supervision and management of the sub-project.

The visit was also graced by the Hon. National Assembly member of the area, the Councillors of the area, school children of Bakoteh Proper Lower Basic School, Yai- Compins, and members of the Bakoteh and Manjai-Kunda Communities.
