Former NAWEC MD Rearrested

Thursday, November 2, 2006
The former Managing Director of National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), Mr Abdou Jobe, has been rearrested, says his counsel at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

At the time of writing this story, it could not be established why he was arrested or where he has been detained.

According to his counsel, Mr. Sheriff Tambedou, Mr. Jobe was rearrested on Tuesday night by men believed to be members of the security forces. He said both the police and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) denied any knowledge of Mr. Jobe’s whereabouts.

Lawyer Tambedou pointed out that his client was granted bail in the Banjul Magistrates’ Court, which had ensured that he met the bail requirements.

He therefore urged the Presiding Magistrate to order the immediate release of his client.

In her ruling, Magistrate Mboto stated that since the prosecutor in that case has gone on official transfer to the provinces, the court could only adjourn the case to allow him to attend court.

1st class 335 Nying held brief for Superintendent Kinteh in the case.
