Players and officials of the Gambia U-20 team were bade a farewell lunch on Sunday by the Sultan Sweet Restaurant along Kairaba Avenue. The special lunch, according to the proprietor of Sultan Sweet Restaurant, was his own contribution in appreciation of the team’s brilliant performance in the qualifying rounds of African Youth Championship. Speaking at the gathering, the SoS for Youth, Sports & Religious Affairs, Mr Sheikh Omar Faye, said the team will receive maximum prayers from the Gambian public as they represent the country to yet another prized championship. He urged the team to be focused while in Congo so that they could bring something back to the smiling coast. “We will continue to pray for you so that you will not only bring glory, but to qualify for Canada 2007 World Championships,” he said. SoS Faye commended the management and staff of Sultan Sweet Restaurant for their magnanimous gesture. Abdou Saalam of Beckon Interactive, said such a gesture has been a tradition at Sultan Sweet Restaurant, adding that the same Restaurant hosted the Egyptian U-23 team during their trip in Banjul in September 2006. ”This is our own way of saying ‘thank you’ for the sacrifice each of you did for this country. We wish you all the best and we are sure that you will make us proud in Congo 2007,” he said glowingly.
