Many APRC Aspirants Eye KMC, Banjul Mayorship

As the race for the forthcoming local government elections draw near, many aspirants from the ruling APRC party are said to have applied for the mayoral positions in Banjul and the Kanifing Municipality.

According to information reaching this paper the applicants for the Banjul City Council mayorship include Emmanuel Williams, alias Manu Kumba, Samba Faal, former Secretary of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs, a previous holder of the position and Mam Saye Njie, the erstwhile Acting Mayoress.

In the Kanifing Municipality, five people are said to have filed in their applications for the top job. They are Yankuba Colley, the latest Acting Mayor, Gibou Jagne, the current Interim Chairman, Mustapha Njie, Lamin Jobe, Serrekunda Alkalo’s son, Mr. Seedy Jobe and Pa Antu Jammeh.

However, according to APRC standing regulations, only three names will be published if applicants are more than three. The list of aspirants could then be forwarded to the President for scrutiny, final selection and endorsement.

It could be recalled that election for Chairpersons of area councils had been discontinued following an amendment to the Local Government Act, thus allowing the elected councillors to vote the Chairperson from among themselves.
