Squatters around the vicinity of State House in Banjul are to be removed soon, following an agreement reached between the Speaker of the National Assembly, Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay and the Secretary of State for Interior, Ousman Sonko.

This agreement was reached at the Assembly chambers on Tuesday during the adjournment debate, which was attended by several Secretaries of State and senior officials, in conformity with the laws of the country.

The whole issue came about following observations made by the Member for Banjul Central, Abdoulie Saine, who described the squatters around the vicinity of the country’s number one citizen as unsuitable.

According to Hon Saine, something must be done to remove the squatters from the vicinity of State House and the beach.

At that juncture, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay, agreed with the Member for Banjul Central and asked the SoS for the Interior to make all efforts to remove the squatters from the area. Without hesitation, SoS Ousman Sonko agreed to the suggestion made by the Speaker.

The Speaker then thanked SoS Sonko and other Secretaries of State for attending the adjourmnent debate, describing the move as healthy.
