NYSS to reactivate regional committee

A one day meeting was on 10th May held at the BCC on the issue of re-activating the National Youths Service Schemes (NYSS). The meeting was organised by Banjul Regional Committee.
In her welcoming remarks, the Mayoress of Banjul City Council, Mrs. Mam Sai Njie Sanneh spoke of the importance of the meeting saying if the committee is re-activated, it will encourage more youths to involve in skills training.
For his part, the Executive Director of NYSS Mr. Musa Mbye said evolving from the industrial age to the knowledge era is no small matter. He said that young people must acquire new skills that very few people now possess. He booted that in a performance focused world, there is a lot of pressure on the youths. “So where exactly do we fit in? And where exactly does a national youth programme such as the NYSS fit in?” He quarried.
Mr. Mbye said to improve at all levels the management with the support of board of directors decided to introduce a nation wide result-based on management method.
As part of its strategic planning, NYSS seeks to increase its capacity to welcome more participants, to diversify its source of financing, to enhance its visibility both nationally and internationally to build an association of former participants and continue to implement new programmes that meet the needs and aspiration of our young people.
DPS Mambanyick Njie said it is not enough to re-activate the committee, if the committee fail to sensitise youths on the importance of acquiring skills. He said it is the responsibility of the youth to take charge of national development and the elders also home to play their role in this.
Adding that it is disheartening after doing so much for the youths and after all they become delinquent. We need the prayers and blessing of our parents to succeed, and guard and respect our tradition. Mr. Njie youths should change their attitudes and plans for good.
Other speakers included Pa Malick Ceesay, Executive Secretary, National Youths Council and Arthur W Jackson, Sport Co-coordinator all expressed their view over the matter.
