Monday, July 30, 2007

Chief Inspector Haruna Jobe, prison warder attached to Mile 2 prisons on Thursday testified before Magistrate BY Camara of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court.

According to Inspector Jobe, the accused, David Colley, has been known to him as the former Director-General of Prisons. He then testified that on 22nd September 2004 his boss, Mr. Colley, sent him to the Jeshwang prison camp along with one Nfamara Sanneh, a driver, to collect a generator. He informed the court that the accused asked them to use his vehicle to collect a generator from Jeshwang prison camp and take it to his house. He stated that they were asked by the accused to go directly to Auntie Agnes Rose.

Inspector Jobe further revealed that when he informed Auntie Rose that he had been sent by the accused to collect the generator he was referred to the juvenile wing. He said at the juvenile wing he informed officers Jainaba Touray and Malang Manneh that he had come to collect a generator and that he had already spoken to Auntie Rose. He adduced that he could not tell the colour of the generator as it was in a carton, adding that he was permitted to load the generator on the vehicle and took it to the accused person’s compound in Yundum in accordance with the instruction given him by the accused person.

Inspector Jobe further related that after depositing the generator in the accused’s compound as instructed, he informed him accordingly. He said he did not open the carton after offloading the generator in the compound, adding that he did not know the reason for taking the generator to the accused’s compound. He testified that he had not seen the said generator since it was dropped off at the accused’s compound.

Under cross-examination by the defence counsel, the prosecution witness stated that he had been in prison service for about 22 years. He said he did not know where the generator was kept, noting that all he knew about the matter was that the generator was handed to him for delivery to the accused’s compound as instructed. He maintained that all what he said in court was the truth.

The case was adjourned to 7th August 2007 for continuation.
