One Abdoulie Max Jagne, a Gambian based in Norway, on Wednesday donated digital alcohol detectors to The Gambia Police Force at the Police Headquarters in Banjul.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Gambia samaritan Mr Jagne said he has observed many a times drivers drink alcohol and drive which according to him is very dangerous .This he said was very difficult for the police to control as they don’t have the equipment.

" I love my nation and love all Gambians , so I decided to help the police with these equipment to  save lives. More are coming soon to help boost the operation of the Gambian police. I hope my donation will encourage other Gambians abroad to follow suit. The development of The Gambia is every Gambian’s responsibility".

In receiving the items, Benedict Jammeh , the Inspector General of Police, lauded the generous gesture of Mr Jagne. He said digital alcohol detectors are very useful for the police, especially to the motor traffic division. "I want to assure Mr Jagne that these devices will go a long way in solving our alcohol traffic related offences.

With immediate effect, the police will send their personnel to test drivers from bars and restaurants and night clubs if they are seen driving their cars and are suspected to be under the influence of alcohol while driving. If they are tested and they are found to have exceed ed the minimum level , legal action will be taken against them.

They can drink if they want but they should not drive while under the influence of alcohol, otherwise they will be apprehended and put before the court of law" he concluded.
