Two lawyers, Aziz Bensouda and Sasum Sillah, were on Thursday sworn-in to the Bar, during a colourful ceremony held at the High Court Chambers in Banjul.

The ceremony was presided over by the chief justice, Abdou Karim Savage, and attended by members of the Bench and the Bar Association of The Gambia.

In his address, Abdou Karim Savage told the new entrants to the Bar that legal practitioners must combine and satisfy the three fundamental requirements of law. He said the first requirement is competence, the second is to serve the course of justice and the third is to pursue the course of justice for no other consideration than justice itself. He further emphasised that their motivation and primary objective should be justice and that they should not be driven by greed, love of power, wealth or fame.

“You also have a duty to clients who have entrusted their lives, properties and confidence in you. Your responsibility to them includes providing them with honest, accurate and qualitative advice and representation,” he said.

Dr Henry Carrol also spoke at the ceremony, which was chaired by Mrs Saho-Ceesay, Honourable Master and Registrar of the High Court. The vote of thanks was delivered by both newly sworn-in lawyers.
