Mass Prosecution of Default Drivers

Following a nationwide crackdown on unlicensed vehicles by the police, the authorities have decided to prosecute the drivers caught in default of traffic regulations.

A group of defaulting drivers were yesterday arraigned individually before Magistrate Mboto of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court, charged with the use of unlicensed vehicle and unlicensed driving, both offences contrary to the Laws of The Gambia.

The offence states that “on the 5th day of March 2008, at Denton Bridge the accused persons were found with unlicensed vehicles and driving without a licence.”

Following their plea of guilt to the charges, those with one count were fined D1000, in default to serve six months imprisonment, while those with two counts were fined D1000 on each count in default to serve six months imprisonment on each count.
