Oley Sey, the expelled nominated member of the National Assembly and Mr Abdourahman Bah, the head teacher of James Junkung Jammeh Memorial Nursery School in Abuko, were, yesterday, paraded before Magistrate Lamin George of the Banjul Magistrates Court on two charges of stealing and conspiracy, both contrary to the Criminal Code, Cap 10 Volume III, Laws of The Gambia.
The duo has denied the charges preferred against them. According to the prosecution, Oley Sey and Abdourahman Bah on 29th July, 2008, in the city of Banjul, conspired to steal D500,000, belonging to James Junkung Jammeh’s Memorial Nursery School in Abuko. On count two, Oley Sey and Abdourahman Bah, on the same day in the city of Banjul and other diverse places, stole D500,000, being the property of James Junkung Jammeh Memorial Nursery School in Abuko.
At the court, the police prosecutor, Inspector Keita, applied for an adjournment to enable him to proceed with the case. The prosecutor also applied for the court to refuse the accused persons’ bail on the grounds that investigations are on course.
“Granting the bail application could hinder the investigations. The amount involved is huge and the investigating team needs to complete their investigations,” the police prosecutor said. He backed his submission, alluding to Section 99(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code and the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia.
At that juncture, Oley Sey begged the court to allow her access to legal representation and noted that sending her and her co-accused to the Remand Wing would mean that their family will not have access to them.
“I want this court to allow us access to legal representation in order for us to be granted bail,” she said.
But the presiding magistrate, Lamin George, went ahead to grant the application of the prosecutor until the next adjourned date, August 25.
