Farafenni Barracks attacker to open defence

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Abdoulie Sonko, the last man standing criminal trial for attacking the Farafenni Military Barracks in 1996, is set to open his defence when the High Court resumes in October.

This development cropped up after the state counsel, Merley Wood, informed the court that the prosecution had closed its case. This was preceded by a no-case-submission of the defence counsel, Lamin Camara, which was overruled by Justice MM Agyemang yesterday.

In his submission, Defence Counsel Camara, who replaced Lawyer Mai Fatty in the case, had informed the court that his client should be discharged and acquitted on the charges preferred against him.

According to him, the accused has no case to answer. He thus urged the court to discharge and acquit his client on the grounds that the prosecution did not prove its case against him.

But Justice Agyemang ruled that the accused has a case to answer and asserted the need for the defence to open its case.

The High Court judge made reference to the history of the protracted case dating way back in 1996, after the arrest of the accused person, Abdoulie Sonko.
