A serious fire outbreak erupted yesterday evening at the Gamtel head office in Banjul.
According to sources, the fire outbreak which started around 5:00pm burnt down to ashes the equipment in two offices in the building’s top floor. Speaking to the Daily Observer at the scene, Alhagie Cham, Permanent Secretary at the department of state for Communication, Information and Information Technology, said he heard about the fire incident around 5:00pm and immediately contacted the acting chief executive officer Phoday Cisse.
Permanent Seccretary Cham also told this reporter that the fire incident occurred in the offices where there are few equipment. He thanked the fire service and their security personnel who were present at the scene for their support in containing the fire.
For his part, Phoday Cisse, the acting CEO of Gamtel/Gamcel, said the cause of the fire is yet to be established but added that investigations are in progress. He then revealed that they suspected fire outbreak around 3:00pm when they begin to smell a different scent and they alerted the fire service to be on standby immediately.
Amadou Touray, the public relations manager of Gamtel thanked the public for their cooperation and support to put off the fire.He also thanked the security for their support.
