Bansang Alkalo on D100,000 Bail

The on-going criminal case involving the Alkalo of Bansang, Mr Saiba Darboe, the 2nd accused, and Yerro Sey, 1st accused, resumed on Monday, 23rd April before Travelling Magistrate Amadou Baldeh. At the adjournment of the case on Monday, the accused, Saiba Darboe, was granted bail in the sum of D100,000 with two Gambian sureties.

During the hearing the police prosecutor, 1260 Cpl. Colley, called two witnesses to give evidence.

In his evidence-in-chief one of the witnesses, Momodou Salif Touray, the complainant who claimed to be resident in Sareh Njobo, said that three days after his compound got burnt, 16 heads of cattle belonging to him disappeared, adding that he thus reported the matter to the Gendarmerie in Kolda, Casamance. He added that he later proceeded to Sareh Bojo to inform a relative about the theft.

He further testified that one Ablie Touray afterwards called and informed him that he had sighted some suspected stolen cattle in Bansang, urging him to find out more. He said that upon his arrival at Bansang, he was shown 11 cattle and was told that five others collectively valued at D34,000 had been taken to the Alkalo.

Detective Fatty, Prosecution Witness 2, was also called by Cpl. Ceesay to obtain cautionary and voluntary statement from the accused.

At that juncture, the prosecutor applied for adjournment to enable him provide further witnesses. The application was granted and the case was adjourned to 10th May 2007 for continuation.

Alkalo Saiba Darboe was represented by lawyer Jobarteh.
