Residents of Old Yundum village in Kombo North District, on Sunday, December 17, converged at the proposed site for the construction of a new modern market, to clear the area.
Situated near the Kombo Coastal Roads, the market would be ideal for it would serve settlements in the area, namely the Yarambamba Housing Estate, Old Yundum, Sinchu Alagie, Tawto amongst others.
The project will be a community based initiative with the technical back-up from the Brikama Area Council. When completed the market is expected to provide dozens of stalls, sheds and canteens for traders in the area. Women stand to benefit more from the project as lack of a proper market is greatly hampering their operation. Currently, they are trading in an unfriendly atmosphere making them vulnerable to the heat of the sun and lack stores to keep their goods at the end of the day’s trading activities.
According to the villagers, the project was realised through the support and understanding of the Central Government and the local authorities in the area.” without their support , we would not be here today clearing. For that being the case, we are grateful to the Government. We want it to be a standard market to boost economic activities in the area for the benefit of all,” they said
The villagers then expressed the need for unity and mutual respect for the smooth realisation of the project.
