Roving market known in the local parlance as Lumo, which is still practised in the rural Gambia, has become more lucrative for many traders. Many, especially women, have been able to achieve a lot in their lives through engaging in the trade.
Our Provincial reporter, Abdourahman Sallah, caught up with some traders at one of such activities in Brikamaba, Central River Region, and asked them about the impact of the market on the lives of the people.
Mrs Mariama Jallow, a restaurant operator said: “For the past 17 years, I have been running this restaurant on each Lumo day. It is through this bussiness that I bought a compound and built a beautiful house. And also pay my children’s school fees.
Matty Mbye, a prominent vegetable seller said: “For the past 18 years, I have been selling in the Lumo and the trade is successful. I urge my fellow women, who are not engaged in anything to come and join the bussiness as it would solve most of their problems,” she concluded.
