Sunday, July 15, 2007

Sainey Sonko, a night watchman of Boto Construction Company, was on Tuesday arraigned before the Brikama Magistrates’ Court presided over by Magistrate EF Mbaye, on charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm contrary to the laws of The Gambia.

This was said to have been discovered on the 28th of June 2007 at Yundum Police Station.
In his testimony, Corporal Babucarr Bojang, a police officer attached to Yundum police station, told the court that on this day, while he was on duty at Yundum Police Station, the accused was brought there by the Inspector General of Police with some officers.

He said he was then informed that the accused was accused of stealing some bags of cement at the CSE depot and was also found in possession of an unlicensed firearm. According to Mr. Bojang, when the accused was asked who was the owner of the gun, he said he was the owner.
“The accused was also asked what he used the gun for and said he was a watchman at Boto’s Company, thus he kept it to protect himself from any prowlers attempting to steal”, Mr. Bojang said. Mr. Bojang concluded that the accused was detained over the counter for further investigations after he was cautioned and charged.

The gun was then tendered and marked as an exhibit. Police prosecutor, Corporal 413 Sanyang represented the IGP.
