Guinean faces deportation

Friday, September 21, 2007

Magistrate EF M’bai of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court has ordered for the deportation of Ebrima Yafa, a Guinean national, after serving a one year mandatory jail term.

Magistrate M’bai gave this verdict after the accused was found guilty of store breaking and stealing, contrary to the Criminal Laws of The Gambia.
Mr Yafa was said to have committed a criminal act by breaking into the store of Mr Abdourahman Jallow on September 29, 2007, with an intention to commit felony. Yafa, who pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him, was also arraigned for stealing a wheelbarrow.

Police Prosecutor Corporal 935 Jammeh told the court that after the accused committed the dubious act, the matter was reported by the complainant at the Brikama Police Station. He said another complain was also lodged against the accused by Abdou Ceesay, a taxi-driver, whom he once hired from Brikama. “The   accused was later arrested with the goods while he sold the wheelbarrow in the sum of D1,000,”  Corporal Jammeh said.

Jammeh reminded the court that Yafa was released from the prison four months ago, after he was convicted by the same court for stealing a wheelbarrow.

Presiding Magistrate M’bai then convicted and sentenced Yafa to six months imprisonment on count one and six months on count two. Magistrate M’bai has also ordered for his deportation.
